meme

I like this meme and it takes my mind off of life for a while. Let's play.

1. Leave me a casual comment of no particular significance, like a lyric to your current favorite song, your favorite kind of sandwich, or maybe your favorite game. Any remark, meaningless or not.
2. I will respond by asking you five personal questions so I can get to know you better.
3. Update your LJ with the answers to the questions.
4. Include this explanation and offer to ask someone else in your own post.
5. When others respond with a desultory comment, you will ask them five questions.

1. What's grad school like?

Good gods, what a big question. First I'll say: every grad school/program/department is completely different from every other one. They all have good points and terrible points. I've attended two different grad programs now, one that I finished and one that I left. They were very very different from each other.

I can tell you to *never* attend the University of Colorado's Religious Studies department. They are very nice people in general, but very very bad when put together in that particular situation.

Ok, maybe I can say some general things. Graduate school will attempt to destroy your life, in many ways. It will give you too much work to do. It will possibly destroy your interest in the field you're studying. It will also possibly give you great opportunities to see the world in a very different way.

There's a lot I can say about this. There's a lot I've already said about it. It's taken me a year to finally come to peace with the whole thing.

So what's graduate school like? In the end, I'm not sure I have a good or quick answer for you.

2. How much stock do you put into astrology?

Mmmm, astrology. This is one area of divination that I know little about. When I was in middle school I read a lot about it, but once I got to the complicated math parts, I gave up.

There seems to be a lot in astrology about the prediction of the future based on the movements of the universe. I don't particularly agree with this. Of course you can then ask me about my use of Tarot (since I'm pretty big on tarot and other forms of divination). I would say that I use tarot as a means of better understanding the present rather than the future. Astrology, to me at least, seems to be only interested in a solid sort of timeline, where certain things are destined to happen. My reading of tarot is very different from this: tarot is a way of seeing options and possibilities and it's about the ability to make choices. Astrology doesn't seem to be about choices.

All that being said, I don't know all that much about it, so my opinion is not necessarily the best in the world.

3. What was your favorite book, as a kid?

This is a hard one, probably the hardest of them all. I read *a lot* as a child. I read everything that I could get my hands on. There are so many books that were favorites or were influential. One of the most influential books for me was "Moon is a Harsh Mistress" by Heinlein. I don't agree with all of his politics, definitely, but the book was fundamental for my understanding of marriage and relationships and somewhat politics.

I also read a lot of Mercedes Lacky, which is probably why I'm a crazy pagan today. I've tried re-reading those books recently and man, I just couldn't do it. But they were great as a kid.

4. If you were exiled from the US, what country would you move to and why?

Most likely England, if they'd have me (and after you've been exiled from the U.S. that becomes a little sticky). I love being in England. I love the people and the streets and the cities -- I love the damn supermarkets. I love the candy and the food. Yay England.

5. If you could change one thing about ADF, what would that be?

Man, I can only change one thing? Tough.

I'd definitely change the open-mindedness of the people who are influential in the the organization. So much of my contact with national has been frustrating and traumatic because they seem unwilling or unable to see other points of view or ways of doing things. I really wish they would just listen to people a little -- it would solve a lot of other problems.
