This stop motion movie "Western Spaghetti is awesome. It's made by PES. They make movies about simple things, but replace all the objects you expect with other objects. Hard to explain -- just watch it.

I also greatly enjoy Game Over. Their version of the Yule Log makes me happy.

"A Hong Kong computer programmer who had legally resided in the US for 15 years (since he was 17) and fathered two American children went for his final green card interview and was locked up, detained until he died of cancer that the DHS refused to treat him for. He had overstayed a visa (the DHS sent a key notice to the wrong address), and this prompted the DHS to lock him away and demand that he waive all right to immigration appeal and be immediately deported. In detention, his complaints of excruciating back pain were treated as fakery, and he was dragged around in shackles after he lost the ability to walk, taken on long, bumpy drives while official demanded that he drop his immigration appeals. The jailers who caused his death were private contractors with fat deals with the DHS to lock up immigration detainees.

As he lay dying, his family -- wife and two children, aged 1 and 3 -- were denied access to him while the warden considered their request to visit."

Cookies

The next big thing in foodie blogs seems to be: Chocolate Chip Cookies.

The New York Times posted this extravagant cookie recipe.

And people responded. Lots of people. Of the ones I read, there was some disagreement.

Orangette was perfectly happy with the recipe, although she still made some adjustments.

Joy the Baker posted four times, first discussing other recipes (Alton Brown, Demolition Desserts), and then breaking the NYT recipe down and testing it out (part one, part two). She seemed to think that the 36-hour resting time did nothing for the cookies; that in fact, 12 hours would do the trick.

I am sorely tempted to make cookies.

[water] [ether]

"Nestle came into Florida and managed to pull off quite the coup.

The company got a permit to take water belonging to Floridians — hundreds of millions of gallons a year from a spring in a state park — at no cost to Nestle.

No taxes. No fees. Just a $230 permit to pump water until 2018.

Nestle bottles that water, ships it throughout the Southeast — much of it to Georgia and the Carolinas — and makes millions upon millions of dollars in profits on it.

The state granted Nestle permission to draw so much water against the strong recommendation of the local water management district staff. Because drought conditions were stressing the Madison Blue Spring, the staff said the amount of water drawn on the permit should be cut by more than two-thirds.

So while Florida is in a bitter dispute with its state neighbors over water use, it's giving its water away to a private company that bottles and ships it to those very same states.

Nestle says Floridians should be grateful."

* Pleas for condemned Saudi 'witch':

"The illiterate woman was detained by religious police in 2005 and allegedly beaten and forced to fingerprint a confession that she could not read.

Among her accusers was a man who alleged she made him impotent...

When an appeal court decided she should not be executed, the law courts imposed the death sentence again, arguing that it would be in the public interest."

* Be careful how you travel through the United Arab Emirates: "Keith Brown and his wife had been on their way from London to Ethiopia when they were stopped and searched at Dubai airport. At first customs officers found nothing, but then a roll-up cigarette was spotted caught in the tread of his shoe. The 43-year-old, from Middlesex, was charged with possession of 0.003g of cannabis and was sentenced to four years in prison." (And that's just one of the stories.)

Hallo!, originally uploaded by IreneKaoru.

* I'm just going to quote this verbatim:

"Green Porno is a series of very short films conceived, written, co-directed by and featuring Isabella Rossellini about the sex life of bugs, insects and various creatures...Each episode begins with Isabella speaking to the camera “ If I were a…(firefly, spider, dragonfly etc.). She then transforms into the male of the species explaining in a simple yet direct dialogue the actual act of species-specific fornication."

from the ether (I-love-my-job edition)

[Last time I posted one of these, Anna wanted to know what the hell the title meant. Back when I was doing data entry all day I spent my free minutes collecting nifty (and not-so-nifty) links to news stories and blog entries. Then I'd post them all to my lj under the title "from the ether" (meaning: collected from the ether of the internet." So that's that.]

* Cute tin stars made from soda cans.

* Cat-burglar joule thief: little hand-made electronics that suck the last of the power from old batteries so they can be recycled. Cute and you get to play with simple electronics.

[Gods, the world is boring today. Somebody do *something* interesting while I'm at work. Better yet, comment on this with some better links, cause I suck today.]

* "The show for the most part is as it ever was: lock a bunch of designers in Parson's basement, feed them bread and water, make them jump through flaming hoops performing tricks that have little to do with the real world of fashion, have Tim look concerned and then have the three judges sit with a representative from the real world of fashion and complain that the results look "rushed." That's the formula and that's what it's always been." -- Project RunGay Address the lackluster and annoying season four.

* A machine that makes cotton candy out of hard candy: only $159!

* Apparently they stopped making Hydrox cookies years ago even though Hydrox are clearly superior to Oreos.

* Brownie Points blog put together a set of savory flavored vodkas including bacon flavor. I'm not big on bacon, but I have to respect the idea.

* BP also put together really realistic candy sushi -- right down to painting the "rice" white with white chocolate. Mine was not nearly so real looking -- I went more for the cartoony look.
