Knight of Imps

What's on the card: Central figure is a man dressed as a knight on the back of a horse. The man is very calm, he looks straight ahead and holds the reins. He wears a helmet, visor pushed back, with an orange flame-like crest coming out of the top. Over his armor he wears a long purple garment with a red salamander. The horse is the opposite of the man: its very emotional, it seems crazy, its blowing steam out of its nostrils and staring right out of the picture. Above the horse and rider and imp is flying. S/he looks down at the pair with a slight smile. Other than these figures (which really dominate the card) there isn't much else going on. Most of the card is black starry sky, with no moon. At the very bottom we see a small green landscape, with what might be mountains or maybe pyramids off to the left. The cat is almost hidden, at the very right bottom corner. We see just his face sticking up into the card looking at the rider.

What I see: The court cards in this deck have always been the least solid for me, so what I write now are my speculations and thoughts, much less fully formed than other cards. Its very obvious who the main characters of this card are: the knight and the horse. Well, really its the knight more than the horse. He's riding this wild horse and yet he's calm and collected about it. On the one hand, you could take this negatively -- he's delusional, he can't see what's really going on with his horse. He might lose control of it and be thrown, because he isn't paying attention. But right now I think I'm leaning more towards the positive side, someone who's taken on a big job/change/task and is comfortable with their ability to complete it. Grace under fire. Poise?

The background interests me. Its so sparse, it could be anywhere. And it gives me weird contradictory thoughts -- pyramids and deserts or mountains and snow. Its very unspecific, but it gives me this feeling of a cold crystal clear night -- whether in the desert or in the mountains.

The cat is interesting too -- its practically not there. The cat is looking at the knight enthralled. He's impressed by what's going on, he wants to learn from that. Or he thinks the guy is crazy and going to fall off. Either way, this man has captured the attention.

Again a card that needs other things around it, but that's really how most cards are in the end.

What the book says: restless, seeking new things, idealistic, courageous, fly-by-night, unreliable, but virtuous. I'm not sure I saw (or see) some of that. I see reckless, i see courageous -- but i'm not sure about idealistic, unreliable, or virtuous. I think it shows a single-mindedness and strength, but about what I couldn't tell you. Idealistic, unreliable, virtuous -- those all have content to them, and I just don't see that content here.
