New Pope = Ratzinger
Here's some choice tidbits:
"Cardinal Ratzinger has been head of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith - formerly known as the Holy Office of the Inquisition - since 1981." So, he was the head of the Inquisition.
"One of his first campaigns was against liberation theology, which had gained ground among priests in Latin America and elsewhere as a means of involving the Church in social activism and human rights issues." So, he was the head of the Inquisition *and* he spent his time persecuting Liberation Theology, the part of Catholicism that calls for human rights and aid to the poor.
"He has described homosexuality as a "tendency" towards an "intrinsic moral evil". During the US election campaign, he called for pro-choice politicians to be denied Communion." Nuff Said.
Also joined the Hitler Youth when he was younger, but apparently that wasn't really his idea.

Date: 2005-04-19 09:47 pm (UTC)Maggie I wanted to ask you an itty bitty favor...would you mind sharing your Beltane sangria recipe? Searching online has yielded some of the most foul-sounding bevarages I've ever encountered.

Date: 2005-04-24 10:03 pm (UTC)Get a bottle of the Sangria! wine from a liquor store (most of the ones I've been to have it -- but if you can't find it, any good red wine will do).
Add to that some good brandy (this is the part where my memory fails me). Its not a huge amount of brandy -- about a cup to a bottle of wine. (sorry these aren't the best directions, we sorta just went with what seemed good at the time). If you get the sangria! wine, i think it lists an amount of brandy -- that's what we probably went with.
Next, cram in as much cut up fruit as possible. Appes, oranges, pieces of melon, and grapes are what we did.
Let the whole thing stew overnight -- this lets the fruit get nice and alchoholic and the alcohol pick up the fruit juice.
Hope that helps (and wasn't terribly confusing)
Yeah...
Date: 2005-04-23 10:50 pm (UTC)Though at least I have read of several top Vatican officials trying to reassure the nervous Rest of the World (tm) that Ratzinger's papal conduct won't reflect the hardline views of his cardinalship when it comes to dealing with other faiths (esp. Judaism, but also "indigenous spiritualities"). True? Who knows... Enough? Certainly not. Still, I'm choosing to believe that the faintest glimmer of hope on one issue is better than no faint glimmer at all, all things -- and our lack of say -- considered.
*sigh*
Against all evidence and experience, I have to admit...
I didn't expect the Inquisition.
